Demand in American Consumer Goods The demand in american consumer is rising outside of the U.S.A because they are exporting a lot more than they did before. However inside the country the demand in most markets is declining. If oil and pharmaceuticals are taken off the list the demand in food and beverages has decreased 1.9 % and in clothing nearly 8%. Business Economics for Entrepreneurs
This is an article on the general view by Bobby Jan on understanding the determinants of demand in economics; consumer's incomes, consumer's attitudes, price of a complementary product, and price of a substitute product. He gives examples and expectations for certain conditions, which help entrepreneurs think about profits to their advantages.

Increasing demand on smaller cars

Since the gas prices keep on rising, it forces consumers to buy smaller cars to afford a car at all. So as the demand slowly increases for smaller cars, the "small car" industry will soon probably also increase the price on smaller cars a little bit as well, so they can also benefit of that situation. Small cars are now the largest segment of the U.S. auto market, so at the beginning, the spike in small car demand happened tot fast, for the American automakers to take sufficient action.
This is an example of and inverse Relationship, the price of the oil goes up, so the demand on bigger cars goes down.
(Luisa)

The recent economic downturn has effected companies like LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics Sony, Nintendo, and Canon. They have been badly hit by the decrease in demand brought about by the worrying levels of uncertainty in the consumer sector. These reports were released after a it was said that consumer spending in the US had slowed in July. This decrease in demand will have heavy effects on the consumer technology market. (Nicholas S.)
Japan's decreasing demand for luxury goods
Since 1996 the market value of luxury products has dropped an astonishing 39% to 10.2 billion dollars. This is partially due to the steady appreciation of the euro against the yen. This has greately affected the Japanese middle-class, the main buyer of such goods. Another factor is the constantly increasing age of the population that has less need and use for these products.
Gucci and louis vuitton have launched more affordable collections to counter the demand for craftsmanship and value for money. (lloyd)

Demand for oil decreasing
As a result of the credit crunch the demand for oil has decreased by 5.3%. Whereas crude oil is tied to the fluctuating dollar, the oil prices have increased. analysts expect that Bush's 700 billion bail out to stabilize the American economy and to nurish the demand for oil back to normal levels. (lloyd)

Biofuels boosting food prices
According to National Public Radio (NPR), as the demand for ethanol and other biofuels increase, the food prices are increasing all around the world. In Bangladesh, a 2 kilogram bag of rice consumes about half of the daily income and the price of bread has doubled. Also the price of corn has more than doubled in the last 2 years because of its use in producing ethanol. These increase in food prices have led to reduction in food stocks. (Myoung-Jin)
In South Asia the prices for both wheat flour and rice have increased greatly. The price of flour has shifted from 18 rupees to 60 rupees ($1) however the demand has not decreased but increased aswell. Seeing the bread is a part of every meal, especially in Afghanistan, the demand for these two resources at higher the ever, yet the population can't be supplied with the sufficient food mainly due to heavy monsoons and power cuts that prevent the flour mills from working. Pakistan on the other hand thinks that it is a distribution problem that causes this shortage. (Niki Spaniol)

Automakers say demand for cars is at 16-year low
~philip begel
Borrowing by consumers slipped in July to the weakest pace in seven months, reflecting a big slowdown in demand for car loans. Automakers reported that demand for cars fell in July to the lowest level in 16 years. Consumers this year have been forced to charge more of their purchases to credit cards as banks have tightened lending standards. That has curtailed use by consumers of home equity loans to finance their spending. The concern is that all types of consumer spending will slow dramatically in coming months as the boost from $106.7 billion in economic stimulus payments wears off.

Demand in Eco-Friendly Cars
Laila Brenninkmeijer
This article is about a survey that was carried out asking people who are going to buy a car in the near future or who just bought a car what kind of car they would go for. Most of them said either Hybrid cars or Hydrogen fueled cell technology. The outcome was that because they see those kind of cars as the future they would rather buy one than a normal gasoline or diesel car. The demand is high for these kinds of cars but so far there are not a lot of available models.

Demand in Oil Decreasing
Mike Schenck

After the recent crash of the U.S. market, the value of the dollar is unstable. Since the oil is bought in dollars, the price of oil reflects that of the dollar. Furthermore, investors are losing confidence in the oil market as its future is unclear, and they are reluctant to invest, especially during the economic troubles the U.S. is facing.

Increase Oil Price
Increasing price and demand for oil is a result of the recent bank bail-out. As trust in money decreases, investment in natural and rare resources increases. A barrel of oil currently costs around 120$. Although the oil price increases drastically in the US, the moderate prices on the Asian market keep the global price steady.

Demand for Diamonds
Diamonds are becoming a more desirable luxury than ever before. The demand for the precious stones cannot meet the limited supply due to their scarcity. In order to meet the high demand for diamonds especially in the growing markets of China and India some have decided to begin producing synthetic lab produced gem stones as a substitute.

: the demand of peruvian mangos is increasing as the preference for healthy food, developed with non contaminant techniques and which protect the environment, is showing a significant international increase. Peru is not away from this process and is realizing a big effort to introduce and position an attractive organic supply which fulfill the quality and standards that are demand by this new market.

'Climate-proof' crop hunt begins
With the demand in food increasing all the time we need to start figuring out a way to keep the supply of food, up to the demand. Food is becoming more scarce so therefore the prices are increasing and less people are able to pay the price. Scientist have began to test and search for food such as mazie and rice in seed banks to see which ones are the most climate proof. The team of scientists will screen the seeds for natural resistances to extreme events, such as bad flooding, draughts and temperature swings. This will hopefully later on protect food from the impacts of climate change. If something is not done soon we will have food shortages and the demand of the food will increase as well as the price therefore leading to greater issues. (Helen Poxon)

Lower demand drives down price of oil
Heating oil declined sharply Tuesday, following crude oil lower, as record prices were forecast to cut demand. The International Energy Agency revised its global oil demand forecast through 2008, suggesting that record prices would erode fuel use. The group reduced its forecast as oil approached $100 a barrel and products reached records. Demand for heating oil, which is chemically similar to diesel, has dropped by about half since new U.S. government rules took effect this year that prohibit locomotives, tractors and other non highway vehicles from using the high-sulfur fuel. (Taylor)

Demand worries send crude lower
The price of crude oil has dropped, as investors questioned the effectiveness and possibility of the U.S government’s bailout of financial institutions. The bailout plan is likely to go thorough difficult procedures, as republicans and democrats rage fierce controversies, facing the presidential election this year. On top of this, Investors are worried that the oversupply of dollars and the increased government deficit accompanying the bailout would depreciate the value of dollars; thus causing oil producers to increase the price in order to preserve the purchasing power made by oil. In addition, many believe that the bailout would itself not be enough to withhold the economy from tumbling down into a recession, which would eventually drop the demand for oil.

"Crops for food or for fuel tanks?"

The article "Crops for food or for fuel tanks?," is written by Guy Lynn. It was published on BBC Lincolnshire on the 23rd September 2008. Summary:
In places like Spain or the UK farmers make a golden business by using wheat, barley, and other raw materials, to make bio ethanol; which can than be used for fuel. Since the demand for fuel is high and brings in loads of money, it is becoming a major supply by farmers. However, experts agonize that there could be a shortage of food if this continues. Everyday, the Abengoa plant in Galicia produces enough bio ethanol, to supply 7500 cars. While some farmers gained a golden thumb, others are worried, that this could be a shut down to food resources. The demand is high for fuel, but shouldn't be as high to block the supply for food. (Laura Gambineri)

Chocolate: Demand flies above market squeeze
While the crisis in the American financial sector continues, the chocolate market keeps growing with an estimated growth of 4% for the next six years. I think this is very interesting since we learnt in class that a decrease in income usually leads to lower demand. In my example, however, the expected shift of the demand curve doesn't occur. (Moritz)

NM utility: New rates needed for growing demand
New Mexico's largest utility announced that it has proposed new electric rates to help the state prepare for future demand and the need for cleaner energy sources.
"New Mexico's economy and its population are growing rapidly, and so is its need for more electricity," Pat Vincent-Collawn, president and chief executive of Public Service Company of New Mexico, said Monday in a release. "These proposed rates are part of our larger effort to prepare for New Mexico's energy future, which includes new sources of power, reduced emissions at our main power plant, and increased investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency."

Water demand could increase 64 percent by 2050
Currently Chicago is not handling a sustainable resource development policy concerning water. Due to projected population increases, and the scarcity of the fresh-water reserve in Lake Michigan, a report filed by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) say the demand for water will increase by 64% round mid 22nd century. “To ensure an adequate supply for residential, commercial and residential needs, we must start now to plan better and conserve more,” - CMAP executive director Randy Blankenhorn (Max Huijgen)

War and Drought Threaten Afghan Food Supply
After a very harsh winter and the following drought across most of the country, Afghanistan now faces a severe food shortage for a fourth of its inhabitants. This agricultural crisis increases the demand for food, especially in rural areas, greatly.
Negative consequences are the imposed threats to national security - the poor farmers without any perspective may relapse in committing crimes or joining the insurgency. (Kai)

Porsche hit as sports car demand slumps
The increasing oil prices and the recession in the United States has really hurt luxury car manufacturers like Porsche. According to Porsche sales have decreased by 45% in the last quarter. Porsche just introduced two new models in the United States before this rapid decrease in demand, however economists don't think that this was the main factor for the decrease in sales. This fall in demand was more likely caused by the high gas prices, low consumer confidence and the depreciation of the dollar making it very expensive to import from countries with strong currencies such as the Euro. (Sebastian Hoefler)

Supply- Demand imbalance boosts oil prices
This article is from the San Francisco Chronicle it describes how the imbalance and inconsistency of supply and demand has boosted up the prices of oil in the past year. It also describes how the constraints in the supply chain of making oil are in every step of producing oil eg. costs of oil workers engineers and costs of building oil wells are either very expencive or very scarce, and it talks about how this effects both supply and demand for oil and also the prices of oil. (By Andrew Edwards)

The Demand for Fuel Oil in Switzerland is rising
The Demand for fuel oil has grown in the last few weeks in Switzerland. Due to the sudden drop of temperture, Swiss houses have turned on their heating system. This has caused a higher demand for heating oil but the clients are lucky, at the moment the price for oil is low. Hence, the price for oil is low so there is even a higher demand and the companys are running out of suppliers who can bring the oil to the clients. Coop has stated that they have enough oil but the suppliers are running low. Their goal is to be as fast as possible. The reason for this is because they believe that the price will drop even more, causing a higher demand. (By Virginia)

Millions hit by power blackout as cold weather increases demand.
An article from the BBC showing how harsh, cold weather increases the demand for power while Power companies are finding it hard to keep the supply meeting the needs. The increase in demand led to multiple blackouts all over Europe. Strong winds and even snow at this early stage have caused companies such as German power company RWE to struggle to keep up with the rapidly increasing demand, causing blackouts in France, Spain and Italy. This may also cause the price of our energy bills to rise all across Europe. (Ollie B)

Mass recall of China milk produce Chinese dairy inspectors found that 10% of liquid milk from three of China's dairies were tainted with melamine. Melamine is an industrial chemical, banned from food, that is normally used in plastics. Dairy suppliers are suspecting of diluting milk and then adding melamine to make the milk appear higher in protein. The scandal has resulted in four infant deaths, and over 6,000 ill (melamine causes kidney stones). The demand for diary products in China has decreased extensively, with many Chinese refusing to buy diary products; afraid they will become sick. Additionally, Singapore has completely banned importing Chinese dairy products and globally, people are more reluctant to buy dairy products, afraid that it could be contaminated. The scandal has resulted in a world-wide decrease in demand for dairy products. (Rob S)

Demand for Mobile Broadband Increasing Rapidly According to the Mobile Pricing Symposium, the demand for mobile broadband is steadily on the rise. Through the use of 3G technology fast internet access can be provided on the go, leading to a rapid increase in consumer demand. In the UK, demand has allowed for major companies to lower mobile broadband pricing by more than 50% the latest 6 months, and everything is pointing towards further demand. (Alex S)

Demand for Meat Falls
As butchers cut more expensive parts of beef the demand for beef is falling. Due to higher production costs for beef the price for beef has risen. Consumers were upset because they were buying less meat for more money than they would of paid and the sales of steak has fallen 17%. (Daniel D)

Oil prices sink below $93 on falling demand It's predicted that US energy demand levels will continue falling as the economy worsens. Events rapidly unfolding on Wall Street are contributing to this. James Cordier states that economic slowdown is unavoidable and citizens will be driving less and buying less. (Alexandria Hewat)

Gas Shortage In Florida This article adresses the oil shortage in Florida because of the demand increase for oil. When Hurricane Ike was discovered to go through the Gulf of Mexico, offshore oil drilling plants must be shut down. In fear of high prices and long lines, people in Florida bought there oil beforethe prices shot up. (Gavin S)

Iphone finally arrives This article talk about the Iphone finally arriving in South Africa. Since it is one of the "most sought-after gadget on the planet" it will definately be demanded in South Africa too. Some people are worried that there won't be enough Iphones supplied, for the huge demand. This is the main part of the article, I also noticed another part which caught my attention. They say that the people won't be able to download music, and I was wondering if this would affect the demand or not. (T De Keersmaecker)

Hunger levels soar in Eastern Africa: BBC reports that 17 million Eastern Africans are in dire need for food. Droughts have led to less food, but also high food prices have had their toll on the African people. This is a clear case of supply and demand, where everybody needs food, yet there is only a limited amount of it (supply), and therefore the prices rise sharply, due to the high demand of a limited resource.

Shares surge on US bail-out plan As the biggest companies in insurance and banking seem to be toppling daily, the financial crisis is at the front of most economists minds. For whatever reason it may have started, it is now getting worse due to a decrease in demand because households are being more hesitant about buying goods. Thus lowering the value of goods (to keep an equilibrium) and making them less profitable, plunging economies into recessions. This article, by the BBC is all about the newest updates (the US bail-out plan) as the situation unfolds and how the markets are reacting.

The Farmers and beef production companies are faced with a challenge because of the mandatory compliance to the COOL program. (Country of origin labeling) To implement the COOL program, the production costs of beef rise which also accounts for a greater retail price. As a result the companies and farmers are in need of a greater demand of 1.2% in order to avoid losses

Nursing Shortage:
This site is a clear example of demand, as everything that is on a shortage is under demand, so it’s basically saying the same thing. And this demand will come for somewhere where it’s needed e.g. If Washington needs nurses and NYC doesn’t, then the nurses will go work in Washington, rather than flooding the hospitals in New York, which means the nurses(resources) get allocated efficiently. by Christian Clausen

Soybeans Near $15 On Stockpile Worries: by Marc
This is an example of demand because it describes the increasing demand for soybeans and corn. Soybeans and corn used to be used only in cooking, but now that corn is being used as a bio fuel, farmers are planting more corn and less soybeans and the demand for both crops is rapidly increasing, which is making the price go up as well. I have heard that in Europe there are laws that are preventing from this happening, because they realize the effect. I believe something should be done so that the price of corn and soybeans doesn’t go sky high like oil, but I find it is good that we are looking for an alternative to oil.

Can Israel Find the Water It Needs? by Amit
My thoughts: Water indeed is a very scarce resource in Israel. The reason for this is because it is highly needed and wanted and there is an extremely limited resource. With a drought almost being in a permanent state the Kinneret’s water line is significantly dropping every year. Demand for water is high because it is used for drinking, hygiene, irrigation, and farming. Of those two them are necessities and agriculture is a large part of Israel’s exports. Stopping supply to any of these could seriously hinder Israel’s health or over-all well being. Because demand is so high for water new technologies are being made as well as reforms. An example of this is, Israel having the largest percent of desalination plants in the worlds along with filtering sewage water. Because of this growing demand and dwindling supply Israel is forced to increase productivity in order to stabilize the prices and cutting back on non-necessities.

XL Leisure Group goes bust. Britain's third largest package holiday company XL Leisure Group filed for administration on the 12th of September. The company who's flights were insanely cheap lost it's demand and as a consequence has such had to file for administration because it relied upon filling of seats as the prices were so low. Taking advantage of the high demands of a few years back the group came with a very-low budget airline to scoop up those who wanted to travel - cheaply. Now that demand has fallen there is not enough money generated and the airline cannot gather profits from such low prices. (Simon Strong).

Cruise Demand Increases
By Ad
The Carnival Corporation faces more demand for cruise services than previously. Although they had a minus of 3% in terms of quarterly profit, this is less than was expected. Reasons for this include their hurricane insurance and higher prices. Their shares increased by 30% due to the number of people demanding the service.

Shortage of Chopsticks

The shortage of wooden chopsticks worries Japan as China goes ecological. Japan receives most of its wooden chopsticks from China and the Japanese are not pleased with the huge jump in the price of wooden chopsticks. The Chinese government put a 5 % tax on wooden chopsticks and the Chinese chopstick exporters responded to the tax and other costs by increasing the price by 30%. Japanese restaurants have started using other forms of chopsticks because of the high price. Japan has also started importing bamboo chopsticks from other countries like Vietnam and Russia. (Juhani)

Demand for Surgical Wear increases as Technology Improves by Ultan Whelan

This article by bNet discusses the change of surgical wear from powdered/latex gloves to non-powdered/synthetic gloves. The change, apparently due to Phil Reynolds, is caused by the development of newer technologies allowing for the reduction in price of synthetic/non-powdered gloves. A decline of 10 % of powdered/latex gloves sold as well as a 17 % increase of non-powdered/synthetic surgical gloves supports the fact that demand for Surgical Wear has changed.

Demand for use of Public Transport System in Belgium Falls (Flemish) by Guillaume Dubois
Demand for use of Public Transport System in Belgium Falls (English)

In this article, "Het Nieuwsblad" explains the results of a survey taken in 2008 of the amount of people satisfied and planning to continue using the Rail system "The Line" in comparison to the survey of 2006. In 2006, 81% of the population of Northern Belgium preferred the public train over cars, however in 2008 that percentage dropped to an average of 77%. Although small, this change in percentage is believed to be caused by the lack of punctuality on the routes that are taken by the trains, which has been becoming worse over the years, causing car travel to become more desirable. This confirmed the belief of the General Director of "The Line" that unless investments are made, the demand for use of Public Transport will continue to fall.

As Wall Street and the economy as a whole faces a serious crisis, demand for hotels in Manhattan and other parts of New York is falling quickly. Travel specialists and agencies believe the falling demand will also result in decreasing hotel rates next year. Previously, the hotel business in New York was thought to be solid and not prone to economic fluctuations, but since 20% of the demand is made up by Wall Street and partners, the demand for hotel rooms is also expected to drop. Mass recall of China milk produce
Inspectors found that 10% of liquid milk from three of China's dairies was tainted with melamine, an industrial chemical.
The EU and the US said they wanted to know how the scandal was allowed to develop - in order to ensure future overseas confidence in Chinese exports. The demand for Chinese dairy products have decreased greatly, however the demand for imported dairy products have increased substantially.Meanwhile, foreign firms which import milk powder to China have pledged not to take advantage of the scandal by raising prices, Reuters news agency reports. Beijing Olympics threatens China's water supply
This article from the BBC discusses the impact that the Beijing Olympics has over China's national water supply. The large demand of water for the event is threatening the millions of residences within the north-western provinces of the country. As the government tries to react to the growing demands of the Olympics by diverting large rivers with the use of canals and tunnels, the places that use to depend on these rivers are struggling with decreased supplies of water. A senior government official described the need as a threat to the livelihoods of millions of Chinese people. (Fred J)

Starting a Company with No Demand for the Product?

Michael Perry cofounded Rocket USA in 1997 with a personal interest in 1950s-era toys. With that in mind, Rocket USA eschews Wal-Mart and other larger retail outlets and focuses largely on specialty stores such as gift shops, Perry said. Rocket USA learned that higher volume of sales does not always translate into higher profits. (Kevin Braunschweig)

Salt shortage, high prices may mean slippery roads
Max Spielbichler

In Indianapolis, there is a high demand for road salt due to the harsh winter last year and the upcoming winter. With this higher demand, the prices are increasing. Its increasing even more with the prices of gasoline and diesel, because most of the salt has to be imported from elsewhere

The world has a water shortage, not a food shortage
Anna Rauter
As a fact water is something that all human beings need. We need it for drinking, but also for agricultre. On one hand: if the amount of water decreases (less supply) the price for it will increase, and the demand will still stay high as it is a substance that we all necessarily need to survive.
What the article is referring to is to the water needed to produce food. 70% of the worlds water consumption is used in agriculture and also 70% of of this water that farmers use is lost (perhaps due to leaky irrigation channels). In order to save the water people are thinking about changing the plants used for agricultre. E.g: instead of planting orange trees, which use up a lot of water, they want to plant olive trees or dates. This creates another demand problem; the supply of oranges will decrease, but there will still be a relatively high demand for them, therefore prices on oranges will increases, whereas prices on olives and dates will decrease (more supply).

Gold Price determined by Oil/Stock/Currency Markets

Although coal is one of the resources contributing to global warming, the electrical infrastructure in America is based on coal. The American People receive their electricity mostly from coal power plants and the investment it would require to substitute to alternative energies is too great. The amount of energy produced from coal power plants is relatively greater than a solar power plant in Kilowatts per Hour. From this infrastructural problem and the increased electricity consumption, it is obvious the quantity of coal demanded will rise in the future.

The increase was caused by decresing prices of household.
